Discovering new books

If you’re like me and are always impatient for your next read, then sometimes you find it hard to find a book that you can really sink your teeth into. There are times where I find myself on a roll and can read book after book without losing focus but then there are times where a book may not catch my attention after the first chapter, or I find myself having difficulty getting into the storyline. Luckily, I’ve had a lot of practise and overtime I have been able to construct my own way of finding new books that meet my needs at that particular time. Say if I’m looking for a young adult dystopian read, a high school romance or an adult thriller novel, there is a way to discover the book that you are looking for. With that in mind, here a few places you can look to find your next read.

kindle reading

A well known site for book lovers and authors everywhere, Goodreads is the first place I look for new reading inspiration. I especially like that you can find book series on authors profile pages, this comes in handy when I’m searching for a longer series to read. Also, it has to be said that Listopia is my savior. When I’m stuck in book limbo and have no idea what to read but am in the mood for something specific like a college romance or fantasy series, this is the place to find it.

Following my favourite authors on social media was a good shout, as they will occasionally post about the books they are reading and give recommendations as well as host competitions and giveaways. Romance author Kristen Ashley for example, posts her opinions on fellow authors new books and talks about what books she’s reading herself. Also, paranormal romance author Nalini Singh has her own book club located on the blog on her official website so that everyone can participate. It’s always good to see authors interacting with their readers and supporting one another, I love the community feel it influences.

Fantastic Fiction

This is a site that I have known about for a long time, it contains great author profiles and provides an organised area for their individual books and series lists. Similarly to other sites, there are suggestions attached to your chosen book for similar reads. I love browsing through the recommendations until I find one that really peaks my interest. But my utmost favourite aspect of the site is at the very bottom of the author page. This is where a list of similar authors can be found. Authors who publish for the same book category, age category or have similar audiences. I really enjoy discovering new authors that match my tastes and for me, this is by far one of the best ways to find them.

Social Media

As everyone knows social media is such a powerhouse. Adding to its vast resume, it is great way to discover new books as well as find authors. Use hashtags on Twitter and Instagram based on your favourite book category or using keywords to find similar reads people are talking about. Or you can follow particular book fan club profiles and enter conversations with other readers to gain suggestions on your next read. Particularly with Twitter, you can find live chats and threads that happen near enough everyday, all you need to do is search. As for Instagram, individual fan accounts can be found that contain amazing images of books that are visually stunning and allow you to see the physical copy of a book and read people’s opinions in the comments.

How do you discover new books to read? Have you tried any of these ways before? What works best for you?

    1. I use to read classics all the time but then went through a young adult phase so I stopped reading them. Think it’s time I started to again 🙂 Thanks for commenting!

  1. I’ve been using Good Reads but I never thought to follow authors on socials to see what good is coming out next ( which seems so stupidly obvious now I say it out loud lol). I love following loads of book bloggers to see what’s good at the minute and following people with similar book tastes always help. I have been added to a twitter book club which has been cool for finding new books so I would recommend it!
    Loved this post!

    1. Some authors are really active on social media which is great, I love when they post sneak peaks of their upcoming novels! A book club sounds good, great recommendation 🙂 Thank you for reading! x
