Looking to get into fitness? Same guys, same.
Even though I’ve been going to the gym for a year now and a few classes before that, I’m still open to finding new ways to enjoy fitness and find the motivation to keep me going throughout the year.
Here are some different ways to enjoy the gym (yes, really).
Take a friend
Even if you’re someone like me who enjoys their own company, sometimes it’s nice to have another person there with you to talk to. You can even use them as motivation to do that bit more or try new things you wouldn’t have done on your own.
New gym gear
I feel like this is always a good way to make you feel confident and fresh before getting stuck in and sweaty! Having some fresh new duds can help to motivate you to go to the gym and work out, even if it’s just to show off your look. I know I like it when I wear something new that fits with my surroundings- it makes me feel like I know what I’m doing.
Set yourself a challenge/goal
I’m not just talking about making it through the gym doors. No, I mean actually setting yourself targets to achieve when you’re there. Beats walking around aimlessly not having a clue what to do next and then just thinking about going home! Why not decide to go on one machine for 15 minutes, maybe another for 20-30 mins and then one more for just 5 mins, whatever it is you feel comfortable with.
Try something new: equipment or exercise
I always struggle with this as I’m not completely in the know about everything fitness related. But one thing I find helpful and fun is people watching. You can get some really great ideas from watching others around the gym. I don’t mean in a creepy way, just in terms of their chosen exercises. Like there’s this girl that always comes in and does some really cool floor exercises that I’ve never tried before but look like something I’d like to do. By doing something new it keeps the gym fresh and makes it less of an effort to go.
Sounds stupid, I know. But honestly researching different exercises before I go to the gym helps with motivation and makes me want to try them for myself. Especially when it comes to floor exercises as most of the time, I do the same thing and have no clue what else to do. But by typing ‘floor workouts to do at the gym’ or being more specific as in leg workouts, abs etc. it gives me more variety and inspires my own little routines.
Make a playlist
It’s so much easier to get into a rhythm and start to enjoy yourself- even when you’re sweating and out of breath, thanks to an upbeat song. Plus, playing your own music means that you can tune everyone else out and focus on yourself. This works whenever I’m feeling self-conscious and want to forget about everybody else around me.
Set a schedule to follow
If organisation is your friend, then you’ll love this one. By setting a weekly schedule this will help keep you on track and set out your day to include the gym, a class or even a workout at home. I do this myself by seeing if there are any classes I’m interested in going to that week and working around them. Or I’ll set myself up to go to the gym 2, sometimes 3 times a week after work for around 45 minutes to an hour before heading home. By organising my week, I know to prepare my gym stuff the night before and head straight there rather than going home and sitting down- I’ll never get up after that!
